Now being implemented in many U.S. cities, traffic calming is a traffic management approach that evolved in Europe. The purpose is to slow cars as they go through commercial and residential neighborhoods. Traffic calming is not meant to ban cars, just to keep them safe. These are photos of traffic-calming pavement markings installed at crosswalks in Union Square, New Hope, Bucks County, PA. They are an effective way to slow vehicles down and alert them of an approaching crosswalk.
